When you decorate your living room with a country theme your home will feel comfortable and your family and guests will gather to relax, play a board game or sit by the fire. A country home has the ambiance of being warm and inviting.

Decorate your living room with a country theme by featuring handcrafted furniture, hooked rugs, folklore patchwork toss pillows, plaid or calico homespun sofa throws, handcrafted antique wooden toys.

Step 1

Before you can decorate your living room with a country theme it is best to buy interior decorating books and to shop online for ideas.  Another way to get ideas is to tour  your friend’s homes and take note of their country theme. Decide on your design theme; farmhouse, rustic cabin, or New England colonial, English cottage, or French country farmhouse. Get a book from the library to learn more about the period that you have chosen, learn about the furniture and the antiques that will compliment your country home.

Step 2

Shop for hand crafted furniture; every country home features handcrafted table and chairs, rocker or a bench.  Choose a shaker design, Queen Ann or Windsor.  You may view primitive furniture; bookcase, bench, side table that features scrubbed pine or painted. Twig or wicker home accessories are excellent finds and will add interest to your country home.

Plan to attend estate sales, flea markets and tour antique stores for your country home collectibles.

Step 3

Collect country interior decorations such as; quilts, carousel horses, vintage toys, Amish Child's wagon or dolls, vintagle wood rocking horse, ornate metal doll stroller, milk jug, rustic barn lanterns, apothecary jars, woven wicker baskets, wood, twig or wicker rocking chairs.  Look for antique furniture, homespun textiles, or hand crafted wood or metal country accents for your living room.

Step 4

Accent the able with wood boxes  tied with twine or a wood carved farm animal.

Flowers are plentiful in country homes as well as dried bunches of fragrant herbs.  A country home always has a lovely fragrance, fill small hat boxes or antique jars with assorted fragrant herbs and rose petals. Set the potpourri on a side table or on your coffee table.

Step 5

Cover the floors with natural barn door wood planks.  Stain the large planks to give them a rustic look or paint them. Top the rustic floors with a hand hooked folk art area rug or stencil and paint a country design on top of the wood floors.

Step 6

The white is a good contrast for all of your interior designs.  Or choose a feature wall to cover with natural wood paneling, or paint the wall warm shade of yellow, blue or hunter green.  Then accent your walls with assorted photographs of your family, hang a patchwork quilt or country theme picture.

Step 7

Add lofty toss pillow to your sofa as this creates a casual and cozy seating area. The overall appearance of the room should be one of comfort for you, your family and your guests.

Step 8

Choose lace, plaid or calico window coverings or opt for white wood shutters.  A country living room is not dark and dreary.  Accent your windows with beautiful drapes with shears so that the natural light can fill the living room.

You can also shop for reproduction tables. These tables will give you the look of a country home without the costs.  Mix the reproductions into your living room as accents. You may want to add an end table, desk or book shelf to the room. Choose the style that compliments your room.  Reproduction furniture rather than antiques are a good choice for families with young children.  Most of the furniture has the protected tops that resist water stains.
