How to Make Fried Green Tomatoes

Growing tomatoes at home usually results in several getting ripe at the same time. Sometimes the home gardener discovers they have more than they need. This is a good time to try fried green tomatoes. Pick the larger green ones from the vine to fry. There are lots of different recipes for making fried green tomatoes. Many people from the South fry green tomatoes quickly and easily by just dipping a slice of a green tomato into a mixture of cornmeal with salt and pepper stirred in and then frying them in vegetable oil on medium heat in a skillet until the cornmeal coating turns toasty brown. This is my favorite method of making fried green tomatoes.

Other recipes are available using the ingredients below:

3 medium to large size green tomatoes

One-half cup buttermilk

One large slightly beaten egg

One-half tsp pepper

One-half cup of all purpose flour

One-half cup of all purpose cornmeal

1 tsp salt

Vegetable oil

(Step One) Slice tomatoes

(Step Two) Mix buttermilk and egg together

(Step Three) Mix cornmeal, one-half of the flour (one fourth cup), salt and pepper in a bowl

(Step Four) Dip tomato slices in the flour (one fourth cup that was not previously used)

(Step Five) Dip in egg and buttermilk mixture

(Step Six) Dip in cornmeal mixture

(Step Seven) Pour a layer of oil one-fourth to one-half inches deep into pan and heat on medium heat setting.

(Step Eight) Drop tomato slices into hot oil and allow around two minutes of frying time, until they are golden brown.

(Step Nine) Remove from heat and place on paper towel to drain off excess oil.
