As more and more people live into their 90’s, no matter how healthy they are their needs will change. It sometimes happens suddenly, sometimes gradually. Regardless of how, adult children are often finding themselves trying to cope with the details of some type of transition for their loved one. Below you will find information that could be helpful. Whether the option is independent living, assisted living or remaining at home with appropriate help, resources need to be found to facilitate lifes changes.
Step 1 – Start to gather information about services in your area, before the need arises. Being prepared, and knowing who to call, when you need to will give you the peace of mind that you are prepared to some degree, when life changes start to occur.
Step 2 – Reach out to your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for information on living options near you. They can also provide you with information on government services to which your family member may be entitled.
Step 3 – Visit the SnapforSeniors, the National Association for Home Care and Hospice and LeadingAge websites. This websites can provide you with a list of residential facilities that cover various levels of need.
Step 4 – Reach out to Geriatric –Care managers who are certified professionals who can evaluate and assist with creating a plan for caring for elder adults.
Step 5 – Explore whether there are Veterans Benefits available through the Aid and Attendance Benefit program, that can help offset the cost of caring for your loved one.
