Volleyball Drills to Improve Team Movement I coached High School volleyball for 17 years. During that time, I worked hard to improve both player and team movement. The team that communicates and moves well always plays better. This article provides drills that will help improve both player and team movement.

The W Drill: This drill starts with a player at the left side of the net. The coach uses 2 balls for this drill. The player must always pass the ball to the setting position on the court. The coach can stand at that spot to retrieve the pass. The first toss goes to the player at the net and the player backs up to the left back position for ball 2. As soon as they make the pass, they sprint to the center front for the next ball (number 3). The player then back peddles to the right back position for ball number 4. They finally sprint to the right front for the final ball number 5.

You can run the player continuously or run two players at one time. If you run two players, you need another coach and 2 balls. You can run them on both halves (sides) of the court.

Go and Get It: Have your team line up in two lines in the two back corners of the court and off the court. The coach stands at the center of the back line with a bucket of volleyballs. Starting with the players on the left, the coach spikes the ball into the floor and into the playing court. The player must sprint after the ball and pass it back to the coaches position. The ball is shagged by another player as the coach spikes the ball on to the court for the first player to his right to play. If a player fails to return a good pass, they must run a sprint to the other end and back.

The coach can control the speed and tempo of the drill. An easier way to run the drill is to have the players start at the volleyball standards facing the coach.

Under the Net: Line up the players at the spiking line on the other side of the court facing the net. The coach has three players stand on the back line facing the players on the other side of the net. These three each have a volleyball. They slap the ball with their hand and the player at the front of the line, on the other side, sprints under the net in the direction of the player with the ball. The ball is tossed to the spiking line on the ball side of the net. The player must stay low and get to the ball, before it hits the floor. They try to pass it back to the tosser. They quickly get up after the pass and run back to a different line on the opposite side.

Play continues until the coach calls it quits.

Take It Out of the Net: Both players and coaches stand at the spiking line facing the net. The coach throws a ball into the net. The player sprints to the net and tries to play the ball up and even over the net to the opposite side. Tosses must be alternated on each side of the net. The object is to sprint to the net and get low to play the ball. Players must then return to the other line quickly.

These four drills are excellent for improving volleyball team movement.
