Bee Balm by Susan GolisButterflies are attracted to flowers that produce nectar. Send out the invitation that says your garden is by far the most delicious in the neighborhood. Serve the butterflies all summer long the nectar that they desire. Here are some tips on how to attract butterflies to your garden.

Step 1

Plan a butterfly garden in early spring. Select a full sun garden site. If you reside in an extreme heat area, part shade in the afternoon will benefit most sun loving plants. The soil for your butterfly garden needs to be rich with good drainage.  Add compost or manure to poor soil.

Step 2

by SgolisPurchase assorted perennials and herbs from a nursery or garden center. Many of the labels on the plants will show you the sun requirements as well as a butterfly symbol. This of course is an indication that this plant will attract butterflies.  I love butterflies and attract them to my garden by growing the bee balm, chicory , chives , evening primrose , Echinacea, garden mint , lavender, lemon balm , meadowsweet, yarrow and valerian, zinnias and black-eyed Susan’s, four O'clocks and cosmos.

Step 3

Feature a fountain or birdbath in the center of your butterfly garden. It is always nice to offer a beverage with the nectar entree. The fountain will also invite songbirds and hummingbirds to your garden.

Tips and Warnings

The butterfly garden is easy to grow and maintain.

Set up an outdoor living area; table and chairs close to the garden, this will make a nice area for you to sit and watch the butterflies.

Use caution if you are allergic to bee sting.
