How to Celebrate the Monokini |

Intro: The swimwear which we today call the monokini started its existence out at a very different garment in 1964. Step 1: The first monokini was a bikini bottom with straps to hold it up. The woman who walked around in it would do so bare breasted. Given the legalities and the violation of social norms that would be engendered by even partial nudity, it is likely that you have never seen the original monokini design on a woman you did not know in public. Step 2: The original monokini designer was a man named Rudi Gernreich and while he sold quite a few of his controversial swimsuits in the hubbub of controversy when they first came out, the design never really caught on. Even for women who go in for partially nude sunbathing, it's easier to just wear a bikini bottom rather to fuss about with straps to hold the bottom up. Step 3: Modern monokini designs to bear a passing resemblance to the original in that anything called a monokini will almost always have some kind of cloth or strap that connects the bottom of the monokini to the top. Because of this connection, the designers can be creative, and even daring in their designs. They can actually bare parts of the body that the standard bikini would not while still preserving a woman's modesty. Step 4: The modern day monokini can vary from something granny might wear to get a little sun while not exposing much to a racy bit of cloth that a runway model who daily dares to bare it all--or at least most--might dawn.
