You can install Windows Vista on an ultra fast USB flash drive and help improve your computer's performance. Before you begin, check to make certain that your computer is equipped with a high-speed USB 2.0 port. Keep in mind that an ultra fast USB flash drive will not recognize an older USB port on your computer. Also, remove any files that you have saved on the flash drive that you want to keep. You will need an adequate amount of memory space on the device to store all of Windows Vista installation files.
Instructions:
Step 1:
Insert an ultra fast USB flash drive into the USB port on your computer. Windows will automatically detect the external device and assign a drive letter to it. Simply, follow Windows instructions for the device. Make sure the USB flash drive has at least 4 gigabytes of memory on it.
Step 2:
Press the “Start” button on the taskbar and select “My Computer” from the Administrator menu box. Look for “Removeable Disk and the drive letter that Windows has assigned to the flash drive. You will have to format the USB flash drive before installing Windows Vista files on it.
Step 3:
Click on the “Start” button on your desktop and then click on “Run” from the menu list. The Run command box will open on your desktop. Type “cmd.exe” in the text box and press the “OK” button.
Step 4:
Type the following commands after the C:\ prompt. Make certain that you press the enter key after typing each command. Enter “diskpart” + “select disk 1” + “clean” + “create partition primary” + “select partition 1” + “active” + “format fs=fat32” + “assign” + “exit.” Â
Step 5:
Insert Windows Vista installation DVD into your CD/DVD writeable drive and copy all the files on the disk to the flash drive. Type the command, “xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\” to begin copying the Vista's files.
Step 6:
Reboot your computer and make certain that it starts up from the USB flash drive and not your hard drive. Change the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) settings on your computer by pressing the "F10" or "Delete" key. Change the boot sequence order, so that the USB flash drive boots first. Follow BIOS instructions and use the appropriate keys that will help you to changed the settings and navigate through your BIOS.
Step 7:
Wait until the installation process is complete. The process should take no longer than 10 to 15 minutes to finish up. Then, Windows Vista will prompt you to enter a user name and password before you can begin using the operating system.
