Introduction: While a vacuum cleaner is designed to help make a home more enjoyable, the odors that can accumulate in every vacuum over time can fill the air with a foul smell even when the machine is not in operation. With age, the components of a vacuum can absorb many of the smells of the dirt it picks up, and because the bacteria has a perfect habitat in which to grow the result is a vacuum cleaner that emits a constant stench. One of the main reasons why a vacuum cleaner smells so very badly is because we humans tend to stay away from unpleasant tasks such as cleaning a vacuum, but if you want the bad odor to stay away a vacuum cleaner needs regular maintenance.

Step 1: The first step to get rid of odors in a vacuum cleaner is to disassemble the vacuum cleaner as much as possible, so that each individual component can be cleaned properly. This does not mean that the vacuum cleaner needs to be reduced to a pile of parts that cannot be reassembled, but within reason there are some parts that generally come off quite easily. Take vacuum tubes and beater bars off and wash them in ordinary soap and water thoroughly, and set them aside to dry completely before reattaching them. Smell the parts you have removed and cleaned before replacing them - if they still smell, wash them again and again until the odors are gone.

Step 2: Turn your vacuum cleaner over and wipe the entire bottom of the machine, making it as clean as is possible. After performing these measures take a deodorizer like Fabreeze and apply it liberally to the vacuum cleaner components that are away from the motor and wiring.

Step 3: Perhaps the most important aspect to get rid of the odors in a vacuum cleaner is to create an environment inside of the machine that is not conducive to bacterial growth. The old trick of placing baking soda inside of a vacuum canister works well to absorb moisture that helps odors to grow in strength. In vacuum cleaners that have a vacuum bag they should be changed frequently, and resist the urge to empty a full bag in order to reuse it. Lastly, try to store the vacuum in an area of the home that receives some direct sunlight daily, as the UV rays can kill or reduce the propagation of many germs.
