Nowadays, nearly all newer laptops have a built-in wireless card installed on them. However, if you have an older laptop computer, you can add a wireless PCMCIA card on it and connect to a wireless network. You can plug the wireless card into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop. However, there are several types of wireless cards available, so you will need to choose the right one that works well with the model of your laptop computer.
Instructions
Step 1:
Turn on your laptop computer and wait for it to finish booting. Install the drivers for the wireless card. If the drivers are not already on your laptop, use the CD/DVD that came with the card to install the drivers onto.
Step 2:
Follow the on screen instructions when you see a pop up window for the driver's installation. If nothing happens after you insert the CD/DVD into your CD/DVD drive, press the “Start” button on the taskbar and select “My Computer” from the drop down menu. Right-click on the CD/DVD drive icon, then select “Properties” and press the “Autoplay” tab.
Step 3:
Restart your laptop, so that Windows can finish up the installation by adding the new drivers onto your laptop.
Step 4:
Insert the wireless card into the PCMCIA slot. Gently slide the card into place. Make certain that it is face up. Normally, when you add a wireless card onto a laptop, you should see the manufacturer's name on the card. Once the wireless card is properly seated, your laptop may emit a sound signaling that it recognizes the device.
Step 5:
Wait for the wireless card to display the installation wizard. It will automatically install or detect the software for the wireless card.
Step 6:
Configure the settings for the wireless network. Refer to the users manual that came with the wireless card. Follow the instructions for selecting a wireless network. Once you make arrangements with an ISP (Internet Service Provider), you will be able to browse the Internet with your laptop.
Tip:
When you're traveling with your laptop, you'll also be able to access Wi-Fi hotspots that are usually located at airports, hotels or coffee shops. Locate the wireless network icon on your laptop and the system tray near the clock on the taskbar. Click on it and Windows will display a list of wireless networks that are in range. Choose an unsecured network by selecting the wireless network name and press the “Connect” button.
Warning:
Secure Networks require a network key/pass phrase, which is similar to a password. Enter the information and press the “Connect” button. But, you should be aware that not all Wi-Fi hotspots are free to the public. Some businesses that offer Internet access for their patrons, may also charge a fee for the service.
