It's possible to access your home computer from a laptop computer, if you have a high speed Internet connection. Both computers must have the latest versions of Windows OS installed on them, so you can use Remote Desktop to remotely access your home computer. After your home computer is set up correctly, you can work on all of the files and applications that you have stored on your hard drive.
Step 1:
Press the “Start” button on your desktop and select “All Programs” from the menu list. Click on “Accessories” and scroll down the list until you find “Remote Desktop Connection” and click on it. A pop up window will appear on your desktop.
Step 2:
Type your home computer name into the “Computer” field box. Press the drop-down menu arrow and choose the name of the computer that you want to connect to if it is available on the menu list. Before you begin, make certain that your home computer is configured for a remote desktop connection.
Step 3:
Go to “Control Panel” and select the “System and Security” option and then click on “System” from the control panel listing. Click the “Remote Settings” hyperlink that's shown in the left pane of the window. Press the “Remote” tab and tick the check box next to “Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer” and press the “OK” button.
Step 4:
Return to the “Remote Desktop Connection” dialog window on your laptop computer. Press the “Connect” button to establish a remote connection with your home computer. After the security window appears on your desktop, type your name in the “User Name” field. Create a password and enter your information in the “Password” field.
Step 5:
Use your Windows log on user name and password to log in to your home computer. Press the “OK” button. After a few seconds, your laptop's display screen will change and you should see your home computer's desktop for your laptop computer.
Warning:
When you want to establish a remote connection with your home computer from a laptop, make certain that your home computer is always turned on and is connected to the Internet. Your computer should not be in sleep or hibernation mode. Turn the features off and change the settings to “Never.” For example, Go to “Control Panel” and select “System and Security” and then choose “Power Options” from the listing. Click the “Change when the computer sleeps” hyperlink shown in the left pane. Use the drop-down menu arrow next to “Put the computer to sleep” and choose the option “Never.” Press the “Save Changes” button.
