I ask myself, "Why are there so many and why are they so popular?" Communication, information, business, entertainment and amusement come to my mind. However, the main one is self esteem. Unconsciously everyone is looking to help themselves out. This might make you think that you are self centered. However, this is not true. Maintaining a good self esteem is very healthy and important. I am sure that you know people that will not use a Facebook or Twitter account. They are affraid of exposing too much of their personal life. However, if used discreetly, they can reap the enjoyment of staying in contact with friends and family. This is why social networking is important to building up self esteem. Self esteem enhancement is done though communication with others. Everyone is proud of their accomplishments and the accomplishments of their friends and family. Social networking gives individuals a chance to show off their accomplishments. Social networking gives people a chance to exchange pictures, announce events, birthdays, anniversaries and completed projects just to mention a few. People use to be careful of building self esteem in the public eye. They didn't want to look like "show offs." Social networking eliminates that to some degree. Social networks like Facebook can even be used to expand businesses. It is actually a tool that can be used like Ebay.If you have an item to sell or donate, you can easily get the information out to friends and neighbors. In conclussion, you can build self esteem and control the information you want to release for public consumption. Just be careful not to release information like social security numbers, credit card numbers and personal data that would hurt you. common sense goes a long way, when using social networking.
