How to Remove Mold |

Mold is a fungus that grows in moist and damp environments. Often leaks in roofs or damage from hurricanes and other natural disasters, lead to water getting into the walls of buildings where mold will then grow. Once mold has started to grow it can lead to a variety of health problems including asthma, allergies, and many more pulmonary disorders. Removal of the mold is important, as well as the repair of the problem that has enabled the water to breach the inside of the building. Moisture facilitates mold growth. Keeping moisture down to a minimum is important. Humidifiers that add moisture to the air and are attached to heating systems also need to be checked periodically to make sure they are operating efficiently. If you have a mold problem here are some things to do:   Step 1:  Wear safety glasses and goggles when working to remove mold. Breathing mold spores could lead to an allergic reaction or an asthma attack. If you are susceptible to breathing problems, you probably should have someone else do the work.  Step 2: Remove all standing water and wet materials. If flooring or drywall can’t be cleaned it may need replacement. Keep the area ventilated to help with the drying process.  Step 3: Throw away any sponges or rags used to clean the wet and moldy surfaces. Mold spores can be very small and not seen by the naked eye.  Using the materials later, may just spread the mold rather than remove it. Wash the clothes worn during cleaning separately.  Step 4: Ceiling tiles, insulation and wallboard most likely will need to be replaced that have been severely damaged.  Step 5: Use a mixture of beach and water (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to clean dirt and oil on a moldy surface. Dish detergent may be used as well. Sponge surfaces and let sit for 15 minutes, rinse off and let thoroughly dry.  Step 6: If the cleaned area, has the mold return or spread quickly it may mean that there is an ongoing leak, or a persistent and extensive contamination has occurred. Professional repairs may be necessary before the cleanup will be effective in the long run.
