Change is not easy and many times it is not quick, but without a plan it will fail. Here are steps to help the reorganization be successful with hopefully less stress.
Step 1: Develop a business strategy; write it down and make it available for all to read. Have a clear direction that the company is going towards. Without a clear direction, the people within the organization will have difficulty supporting the plan and struggle aligning with it.
Step 2: Have the right people in the jobs to do the work involved. Start with the executive level and work down, making sure your have the people with the talent to do the jobs necessary on board.
Step 3: Have thorough planning discussions before you launch your reorganization. Be able to develop a flow chart of all the possible outcomes of every decision, and know what will happen in every situation that may occur. Have the team fully understand what they will need to do, so that they can react quickly and decisively. If there is a lack of communication through the reorganization, others will feel that the plan was not thought out well.
Step 4: Make sure that all the leadership, from ownership through management is in agreement with the changes. This needs to be more than just verbal agreement, they will need to be part of developing the new organizational structure and be able to handle the feedback they receive from others within the organization who may be critical of the changes.
Step 5: Change takes time. Make sure to plan enough time to accomplish everything. It is better to have the changes occur ahead of schedule than take longer to implement. Be prepared to make some changes during the organization, as potentially outlined in your flow chart.
