Yoga has been used by many people as a way of improving their overall feeling of well being.  The meditation and biofeedback in combination with the gentle stretching exercises have increased lung capacity and body composition.  Some forms of yoga are more beneficial than others. The gentle practice of yoga has also given people relieve from hip pain and discomfort.  It has enabled people to manage their hip pain with less reliance on drugs. It helps because:

1-      It strengthens the small muscles that are used to move and stabilize the hip joint. There will be less stress put on the joint, the better the muscles around the joint support it.  Less stress means less pain and discomfort.

2-      It increases the flexibility of the muscles. The increases flexibility attained through the yoga stretches, increases the range of motion and further reduces pain.

3-      Yoga stretches open up the hip joint increasing the range of motion and reduces the amount of weight on the smaller areas of the joint.  Less weight on the smaller areas of the joint, further reduces the chronic pain many patients otherwise experience.

4-      Proper stretching before any exercise routine will enable all the joints to function better and prevent injury.

Before beginning a yoga program discuss with your doctor what kind of yoga program to consider. Those that are more gentle and focus more on posture and breathing may be recommended such as:

1-      Hatha Yoga – in Hatha yoga you perform gentle stretches, breathing slowly and deeply to combine mediation that will work to relieve stress and alleviate the pain.

2-      Bikram Yoga – in Bikram yoga the participants are in a very warm room, where the heat helps to warm muscles, ligaments and tendons to enable them to move more easily.

There are other more strenuous forms of yoga that may not be advised for people suffering from joint pain.  It is important to talk with your medical professional.
