Whether it is a new website or a marketing campaign for a new product or reaching into a new market segment to reach potential customers you have never approached, it can be an exciting time. It can also be filled with pitfalls and frustrations. Proper planning will lead to the best results.  Step 1: Determine what you need accomplished. Create a list of what absolutely is necessary, what you would like, what you wish could be done, if the available resources are there. Resources are more than money, they also include time and materials.  Step 2: Before talking with potential service providers, determine what you are willing and able to invest in the project. Whether you are talking with a web designer or an advertising executive, be willing to give them a general idea of what you are willing to invest financially. Donât ask them to waste âyour time or theirsâ if what you are looking to invest in the project is unrealistically low.  Value their expertise. If you are talking with someone you are uncomfortable sharing this information with, you should find someone else. If you canât be honest with them, it will make for a very uncomfortable relationship.  Step 3: Keep the lines of communication open after the initial discussion phase. Set the expectation that whenever there is a question that comes up, it will be asked and honestly answered. That needs to be understood by all people involved in the process.  Step 4: Remain flexible. What initially began as a need, may change over time. Be prepared for all possibilities and leave room for flexibility. Donât set unrealistic timelines for projects and make sure that everyone involved understands that it is important to the project for people to âsay what they will do and then do itâ for the project to move forward as smoothly as possible.
