The axle shaft transfers power from the gearbox or chain to the wheels. This is different from the drive shaft, which transfers power from the engine to the gearbox. The axle shaft is typically enclosed within the axle, on a vehicle. However, an axle shaft is also used with other types wheels, such as those found on a bicycle cart. Measuring the axle shaft is may be required if you need to replace a missing wheel.
Things You'll Need -Ā Concrete block, Piece of wood, Wrench, Tape measure, Caliper
Step 1 - Place the cart upside down on the ground. If this is not practical you can set a concrete block or a piece of wood under the cart, to raise it off of the ground.
Step 2- Pull the cotter pin out of the axle and set it aside. If a cotter pin is not present, a bolt or nut may need to be removed by using the wrench. Turn the wrench counterclockwise or to the left to remove the nut or bolt.
Step 3 - Pull the wheel off of the axle and set it aside.
Step 4 - Measure the width of the axle shaft wit h the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement on a piece of paper.
Step 5 - Find the diameter of the axle shaft by using a caliper. Open the end of the caliper and place it over the axle shaft.
Step 6 - Close the teeth of the caliper and read the measurement on the scale. Make a note of the measurement on a piece of paper.
Cross reference the size of the axle shaft with various wheels to find one that will fit the cart.
