Introduction: Parakeets can be amazing pets and companions, and brighten any home with their presence and cheerful chatter. As a responsible pet owner, Parakeets are really not too difficult to care for, they do however require a pet owner to be aware of their needs and the possible health issues related to their species. This is not by any means to imply that Parakeets are more difficult to maintain than other pets, most of the health issues related to Parakeets are the result of accidents in the home, and from owners that do not recognize the signs of a Parakeet in distress. Step 1: To care properly for a Parakeet, begin with the basic necessities of life for any living creature. A Parakeet cage should be of appropriate size with plenty or room for the bird to exercise and should include a perch. The cage should be stored in a warm location within the home, away from any drafts or potential hazards from other pets in the home. At least twice daily, the cage should be cleaned thoroughly, and fresh water and food supplied to your Parakeet. Follow your Veterinarians recommendations as to the types and quantities of food that is best for your Parakeet closely, and monitor their weight regularly, as weight loss can be a sign of serious illness. Feeding and cleaning times are a great opportunity to interact with your parakeet to keep them mentally stimulated and active. Step 2: A healthy Parakeet exhibits shiny feathers and eyes, has no crusty accumulation on their beak or face, and is generally alert and very active. One of the main issues involving Parakeet health is that they suppress showing illness outwardly by nature - in the wild, it would single them out to predators. So it is very important for a Parakeet owner to recognize the warning signs of illness quickly, and get professional help accordingly. Some of the more obvious signs would be a Parakeet that is not eating, has a sudden change in bowel movements, or has decreased activity for an extended period of a day or more. If there is any question that your Parakeet may be ill, get it to an Avian Veterinarian as quickly as possible. Step 3: Because of a Parakeet's nature, in many instances by the time a pet owner realizes the bird is ill it may already be in serious condition. If this is necessary, remember to cover the cage and keep the bird as warm as possible while traveling especially in the winter months. Tips: Parakeets are delicate creatures - keep a close eye on their health.
