Every year the average age of Americans increases. People simply are living longer. More and more people in the next century will become centurions than ever before.
For seniors to remain as healthy as possible they need to continue to exercise. The National Institute of Health suggests that all seniors need to follow some simple steps to keep exercise in their lifestyle.
Step 1: Walking is a simple activity that can lead to improved cardiovascular and circulatory functioning. Swimming and biking are also activities that many can maintain as they get older to improve their heart and circulation.
Step 2: Include strengthening exercises to build muscle tissue and reduce muscle loss which can naturally occur with the aging process. Consider yoga as a way to add these exercises in addition to working out with resistance bands and even a weight training program. All programs should be undertaken after a medical consultation and with the advice of a professional trainer.
Step 3: Start a workout with stretching exercises to keep the body flexible along with exercises that will help with balance. Working to maintain good balance will minimize the possibility of falls, which can cause broken bones and other complications.
Step 4: Return to exercising as soon as possible, if you have had to stop for any reason. Upon restarting your exercise program, start slowly and build up your stamina and endurance.
Step 5: Find a friend to be your exercise buddy. Meet new friends by joining a gym, or visit the local community center that may offer special classes for seniors.
