Hunting for yellow chanterelle mushrooms in autumn (September-October) is a fun activity for you and your family. Spending a day outside in a large population of Oak and other hardwood trees will allow you to view wildlife, enjoy nature and hunt for yellow chanterelle mushrooms. Mushrooms grow during autumn due to the damp weather. If you reside in an area where the daily temperature is in the mid-to low seventies, and the moisture content in the air is high along with an abundance of tree shade and damp conditions then you will be able to hunt for yellow chanterelle mushrooms in autumn. Instructions: Step 1: Hire a guide or an expert mushroom picker if you are unfamiliar with the types of edible mushrooms. Step 2: Plan to hunt for yellow chanterelle mushrooms on a day where rain is in the forecast and the temperature is warm mid 70’is an ideal growing temperature for mushrooms. A damp day is a good day to hunt. Step 3: Dress according to the weather and the terrain and protect yourself from insects: mosquitoes, chiggers and ticks. Be prepared to hunt off trail, to climb over timber and to hike through leaf piles. Bring rain gear if showers are in the forecast. Step 4: Bring along a large bucket or pail. Okay to attach the pail to a shoulder strap as this is a good way to keep your hands free. Step 5: Hunt for mushrooms in the shadows. An area with dense tree growth, shade and thick leaf matter, keep your eyes on the ground and carefully check around the trunk of hardwood trees. Step 6: Cut the mushroom stalk at the soil line with a sharp knife. Gently place the mushroom in the pail. Tips: Check all mushrooms by showing them to the expert mushroom picker. Make sure the mushrooms are edible. Clean fresh mushrooms and cook them on the day that you pick them. The flavor and the nutrients is better when they are freshly picked. Clean mushrooms by trimming off the soft spots with a knife. Wipe the dirt of the stalks with a damp cloth or use a soft brush to clean the debris from the mushroom cap. Apply water lightly; use cold water to quickly rinse the mushroom. Do this to remove any stubborn debris. Warning: Avoid washing or peeling the mushroom when cleaning. Do not store your mushroom wed, it is better to wet them right before cooking.
