Ā Intro: 1980's fashion hit a retro surge of popularity just a couple of years ago. As they say, don't ever throw anything away as it will eventually come back into fashion. In case you didn't live through the 80's ... here's a quick glimpse into what you can expect to see at an 80's retro party! Step 1: Color! That's right unless you were "Goth" (which label did not exist back then), you most likely wore a lot of color. Hot pink, baby pink, baby blue, flourescent green and yellow were strong back then. Wearing chunky plastic bracelets or flourescent rubber bracelets was also popular. In the early - mid-80's wearing lacy gloves was also hot - but just one! Step 2: Lopsided was cool! It seemed like everything was lopsided back in the 80's. Michael Jackson wore his famous one glove, Madonna wore her lacey glove on one hand and so did many girls. Some girls wore their hair short on one side and longer on the other. You would see girls wearing one long earring and then a short one in the other ear. The earrings did not match. And, shirts that went over one shoulder were popular. Step 3: Pump up the volume! Hair was all about volume thanks to Cindy Crawford. We fanned out the sides, spiked up the top and either your hair was in "hesher" style of straight spikey (like the picture above) or was more "Full House" style with long curls. Regardless, the sides always went out from the head like wings and the top was always high. Step 4: Physical, I wanna get Physicaaaaaaal ... ok, you probably don't know what I'm referencing, but your Mom will! Early 80's was just packed with women in head bands and leg warmers thanks to a movie called, "Flashdance." Girls also wore high top tennis shoes with their socks scrunched down. Step 5: Bandanas! Yes, girls and guys wore bandanas in the 80s'. You'd see them around the neck, or the thigh. Popular colors included black and white zebra prints and red. In case you wonder how to wear them, check out a Bon Jovi or Patti Smythe video on Youtube. Step 6: 501's baby! If you wore jeans in the 80's, you likely stuffed yourself into a pair of button fly 501 jeans. Anything else just wasn't cool. If you were super cool, you paired it with a jean jacket. Step 7: All about the shoes! Along with high top tennis shoes, girls wore black boots with fringe on them (the longer the better!), plastic "jelly" shoes and leather gladiator sandles. If you wore the boots, you needed to stuff those 501 jean legs into the tops of them to show them off. Tips: Don't be afraid to wear your make up loud if you are dressing like the 80's. Pale pink lipstick, blue eye shadow and eyeliner were the rage! Warnings: Unless you really want to look dated, keep the 80's outfits either in your closet or reserved for retro parties!
