How to Humanely Trap Feral Cats |

Introduction: Trapping a feral cat is the only humanely way to transport cat to veterinarians for medical care or to place the cat in a care giver's colony. Should a human try to handle a feral cat with their bare hands they will be scratched or bitten, as feral cats are terrified of humans and will try to protect themselves. Trapping is not a difficult task however one needs to have time and patience. Some cities require that all residents get a permit before trapping any animal in the city limits, so check with animal control before you proceed in trapping a cat. Instructions: Step 1 Purchase a medium size live animal trap. This trap is a good size for small animals. Step 2 Develop a dependency with the feral cat by feeding the cat at the same time daily. Set up a feeding station that is in an out of the way location. Step 3 Feed the cats twice a day in the morning and at night. Along with the food provide the cats with a bowl of fresh water. Step 4 Begin trapping when cats are dependent upon you for food. Note if cats come running to greet you or if they are waiting for you at the feeding station, it is time to proceed in trapping. Step 5 Refrain from feeding the cat for one day before trapping. Provide water for the cat but do not give it any food. Step 6 Set up the trap by folding newspaper so that it fits neatly in the bottom of the trap. Apply tape to the ends of the newspaper if it is a windy day. Trapping needs to be stress free for the cat. See Tips for information on trapping finicky cats. Step 7 Bait the trap with tuna fish in oil. Drizzle some of the tuna oil in the front of the trap. Then place one teaspoon of tuna at the back of the trap. Step 8 Set the trap on level ground close to the feeding station. Open the door to the trap and set the trigger bar. Place a tarp or a light weight blanket over the trap, but do not cover the trap entrance. Step 9 Step 20 to 30 feet away from the trap and wait for the cat to enter the trap. Watch the trap from afar; do not leave the trap unattended. When the trap door closes, go to the trap and cover the entire trap with the tarp or blanket. Step 10 Remove the trap from the area and take to the veterinarian or to the waiting station. Tips: Label your trap with your contact information. Also note the location where cat is being transported. Since 2004 I have been a caregiver to a colony of feral cats. In my experience I have found that finicky cats will enter a trap when there is a light layer of straw over the newspaper. This procedure seems to work great with cats that reside in a wooded area. Warnings: Do not use darts, tranquilizers or fish nets to capture the feral cats as these methods may harm the cat and cause needless stress. It is better to trap during the daylight hours especially if there is wildlife: raccoons, skunk, and possums in your area.
