What to do with the pumpkin, now that Halloween is over and the piles of candy? The first thought that enters your mind is, “lets get a trash bag and throw this stuff out,” but did you know that there are other things that can be done with both the candy and the pumpkin? Instead of throwing the stuff out or taking it all to the landfill, read here to get some great ideas on how to compost the items and make it good for the earth!

After the pumpkin goes bad or you simply do not want it anymore, take the pumpkin and chop it up. Add it to the compost pile you already have or start making one. Pumpkins are something that offer tons of great nutrients for the ground as well as plants or vegetables. The candy can of course be added to the compost pile, just make sure to remove the wrappers and other things like the sticks or parts that cannot be broken down.

Remember to break everything up. The pumpkin will decompose a lot faster if the it has been chopped up into smaller pieces. The candy can also do the same things as long as it is in smaller pieces as well. Make sure to cover the pumpkin pieces and candy up with something like leaves or brown pieces of paper. Good composting systems already include some kind of green or brown things to get the composting done quicker.

Make sure to add newer things to the compost as time goes on. Compost is something that is great to use in the spring months if you plan on having a garden. Just simple add the compost along with any fertilizer or dirt when planting the garden and the compost will be one of the best sources of nutrients for the garden or other things that you use it for.
