Go into any lumber yard, and you will shocked at the price of wood. Did you know that old wood has more value than new lumber? In the Great Lakes area and the Northwestern part of the U.S., people actually bring out old wood from trees under lakes and streams for use. Some of this lumber has been under water for over 100 years. You don't need to go to that extreme. This article will tell you where to go for old or used lumber.

1. Old Farms; Take a drive into the country, around old farms, and look for stacks of old lumber siting near sheds or barns. You might even find it stacked next to a fence. Check with the farmer to see if you can make a deal on it.

2. Lumber Yards; Have culled lumber piles. Culled lumber is warped or lumber that wouldn't sell for one reason or another. You can buy this for up to 75 percent off. You might even get it for nothing, if you buy something else. Negotiate.

3. Wood Pallets; They are begging to be picked up. Pallets that are old and broke have no use to anyone. It isn't the best lumber in the world, but it could serve your purpose. Most pallets are made with 2 by 4's and 1 by 4's or 1 by 6's. They are great for shelves or small construction projects. Some companies cherish them and some don't. A manager is always looking to pick up a few extra bucks. Always ask, "Would you like me to take those off your hands?" You might get them free.

4. Saw Mills; They always have scrap wood laying around. The good thing is that, this lumber is relatively new. Like the company manager above, this is quick bucks for bad wood.

5. Salvaged lumber; Old wood trim and window sills/frames can still be used for a lot of projects

6. You can find wood at trash dumps. Many times you can even find antique lumber at places like this. You use it and keep it from being burned and polluting the air with CO2.

Old lumber from older houses is better in quality than today's particle board or construction lumber. You are getting good lumber, recycling wood, and saving the planet's ECO system. The next time you go into an old building, checkout the wood work. Especially look at doors and door frames, stairways, and windows. You will be amazed at what you discover. Old wood can add to the quality of your wood project. It will give you a good feeling of being an Eco-friendly consumer.
