A simple way to get rid of flies is to use plastic bags of water.  As strange as it sounds, it does work.  It is a great way to avoid chemicals or disgusting sticky fly traps when you are cooking or eating outside.  It is safer for the kids and an interesting science experiment.  This method uses a few house hold items and some water to reflect the sun.   You will need:

One gallon zipper bags or used plastic water bottle

Water

Something shiny - piece of tin foil or coin

String

1.  Fill the one gallon zipper bags halfway with water.  Recycling used clear water bottles will also work and are easier to hang.

2.  Place something shiny such as a coin or piece of tin foil in each bag.

3.  Seal the bag.  Use electrical tape around the bag to ensure water does not accidentally spill.

4.  Tie a strong string tightly around the top of the bag and hang in an area where the sun or other light can shine through.

The reflection of the light through the water bags appears as movement.  The flies will think it is a predator and fly away.  It sounds strange, but has successfully worked at family cookouts.

Tips:  Set a sponge in a saucer and soak with Lavender essential oils to repel the flies.

Warning:  Use a strong strange and do not tie over the area you are in.  Guest will not appreciate an accidental water balloon dropping on their heads!
