If you are interested in teaching your dog behavior skills, it will take time and patience.  You also need two other items. You need a choke chain and a leash.  The choke chain should have two large loops on it.  One at each end.  You then need to have a leash, that can attach to the choke chain.  Don't worry about actually choking your pet.  It won't happen. The choke chain will always release easily.  Below are some steps, that will lead you up to getting your dog to lie down.

Step 1.  First get your pet use to the choke chain.  Simply walk your dog around in a large circle, with the choke chain in place and on the leash.  Stop every now and then, by gently tugging on the leash and choke chain..  Always try to get your pet to walk next to you.  Usually on your left.  Work on turns and reverse turns slowly.

Step 2.  Use vocal commands loudly.  "Heel!" and "Sit!"  Heel is for your pet to walk at your side.  Sit is when you come to a stop.  To get your pet to sit, hold the leash with one hand and use the other hand and gently push on your pets hind quarters.

Step 3.  To get your pet to lie down, use the choke chain and gently, but firmly, pull it towards the ground.  Use the words lie or down.  Don't use both.  A single tone (word) is best.  You might have to push your pet to the ground.  Start with the hind quarters first as you pull downward on the choke chain.  While you have your pet down, use the word stay.

Training your pet is an everyday practice for you as well.  Be patient and vigilant as you work with your pet.  Always be loud and firm, but not harsh.  Finally, always praise your pet, when they do well.  Petting and hugs are great as rewards.
