How to Make Rum Sauce for Desserts

This is an easy recipe to make rum sauce. This rum sauce can be used to spiff up many desserts.  You generally use rum sauce over cakes, but you can also drizzle it over puddings, ice cream or any other dessert. Rum sauce is a great way to turn a store bought pound cake or angel food cake into a gourmet dessert.  Just cut slices of the cake, pour on some rum sauce, top with a spoonful of whipped cream, tap on a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg, and you're done!  Want some color?  Add a maraschino cherry on top!  Please note: this recipe contains rum and is for adults only.

Ingredient List for Rum Sauce for Desserts:
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup white granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter, which is one stick (use real butter, not margarine)
1/4 cup rum, dark rum is best

Step 1:  Combine the water, sugar and butter in a small saucepan.

Step 2:  Heat over low heat until mixture reaches a boil.

Step 3:  Remove from heat, add the rum and stir.

Step 4:  Let the rum sauce cool in the saucepan.

Step 5:  Pour the rum into any jar or container with a lid.

Step 6:  Use the rum sauce right away or store it in the refrigerator for two weeks.
