 If you get lost the rescue personal will have an idea of where to start their search patterns. Your survival kits needs to have water proof matches or some kind of fire stick. You need to stay dry and warm. You need a compass and maps of the area. You can put in a small knife or razor blades and a small flash light and extra batteries.  There are survival knives in sporting good stores that have water tablets, fishing line and hooks, small bandages and antibiotic cream all in the handle.  You need to buy a whistle this is good to have if you are hurt or have fallen where people can't see you. You can take a cell phone but you should turn it off to save the battery. If you are in the deep woods it probable will not have reception so don't waist the battery.   Get a paper back book on food and making a shelter in the wilderness. Not all wild berries and leaves are safe to eat After you read some of the pages you can use the paper to start a fire. You must stay hydrated and warm especially at night. You don't want hypothermia to set in if it gets cold at night.  You can get a GPS unit and use it with your map this can help show your location. If you are not sure where you are and lost set up a camp don't start walking around. Stay warm you can use dry leaves to cover up with, look for the lee ward side of trees or hills to rest.  Take water purification tablets. Take at least 2 light weight containers for water and energy bars put them in your backpack when hiking and backpacking in the wilderness. Don't panic you need to stay calm and conserver energy if lost in the wilderness when backpacking.
