What Is Acne?
If you know what acne is, it is easier to understand exactly what is happening to your skin.
Acne is the overproduction of oil by the oil glands of the skin. The oil that normally lubricates the skin gets trapped in blocked oil ducts and results in what we know as pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads on the surface of skin. Pimples are small skin swellings that sometimes contain pus. Blackheads are dark formations on the skin due to an over abundance of oil in a blocked skin pore. Whiteheads are small flesh-or white-colored bumps due to skin pore blockage. In most people, acne will last for about three to four years and tends to disappear after puberty.  Sometimes it is less than this, so do not despair. You will get through this.  Try to follow the advice listed below.
Don’t pop that pimple!  It causes irritation, redness, and exposes your face to bacteria.  Keep you hands off your face!  It can become and addiction.   It may be one of the hardest things to learn, but you need to un-do this habit. It will save you days of distress about how you look.
You cannot wash away pimples.  Wash your face only twice a day, once in the morning and before you go to bed.   Use a mild antibacterial soap. Apply an astringent like witch hazel which does shrink body tissues.  Another astringent is alcohol.  Use a Q-tip to apply to the affected pimple only.   An astringent is chemical that tends to shrink or constrict body tissues, usually locally after topical medicinal application.
Change pillow cases frequently.  Sleep with your hair off of your face.  Oils and bacteria should stay off the face.  Also buy buy a new pillow every 3-4 months helps keep bacteria off your face.
Limit sun exposure. I may seem that it helps, but in the long run it only hurts the cure of acne. It is a good idea to use sun screen. It can be applied and acts a light moisturizer.
In order to cure acne you must find out what works for your skin. Find out what skincare products out there will treat your acne.  How to find out what cures your acne is all about the ingredients in your skincare products, from drugstore products to high-end brands. Figure out what kind of skin you have either oily, dry, or combo. (Most likely you have oily skin if you have acne, and there are those who gets the occasional pimple and blackheads who have dry or combo skin). There are so many products to choose from  You are going to have to experiment and try different products to find the one that works best for your needs and skin type.   Vitamin A products such as Retin-A are one the newest and effective products.
Your dermatologist could prescribe you a prescription for antibiotics, but I suggest you try all the other advice above first.  We have a tendency as a nation to use too many antibiotics and thus they become ineffective.  Also your dermatologist does know about all the new products out there and can recommend what would best fit your skin type.  Finding referrals from your doctors and friends that have the same skin as you can help point you in the right direction. However, everybody’s skin is different so finding a cure is really through trial and error.
Tip: You will need to know that after a period of time, the treatment that has been working for you may suddenly stop working.  Your skin gets used to one product and you will have to change products.  Changing skin products off and on will keep your acne in check.
