How to Make a Tropical Rainstick |

A tropical rainstick is an instrument that is traditionally made from a cactus or bamboo tube. The tube of cactus or bamboo has pins or thorns sticking through it in a spiral fashion. The tube is then partially filled with small pebbles. When you tilt the rainstick, the pebbles roll down the tube and they hit the pins, making the sound of rain. You can make a tropical rainstick as a craft project using a cardboard tube. This craft project will require the help of an adult and it is not intended as a toy for children. However, a tropical rainstick makes a great science project for a young student or makes an interesting musical instrument to bring to show and tell. Step 1: Get the following supplies to make your tropical rainstick: a heavy cardboard tube (a tube used for shipping items is good), tape or fabric and rubber bands, short nails, a hammer, small pebbles or beans, decorative supplies such as paint, stickers, etc. Step 2: Draw a spiral line going up the entire tube. The spaces of the line should be about two inches apart. Step 3: Tap nails into the tube along the line, spacing the nails very close together, about 1/4 inch apart. The nails need to be short enough so they do not go through to the other side of the tube. Step 4: Tape one end of the tube shut with duct tape or packing tape. You could also seal the end with a piece of fabric secured to the tube with a rubber band (this method allows you to open the tube if necessary). Step 5: Add a couple handfuls of tiny pebbles, beans, rice, BB's, or anything that will make noise when it hits the nails. Step 6: Tape the other end of the tube shut (or cover it with fabric secured with a rubber band). Step 7: Decorate your rainstick as desired. You can paint it, add stickers, add glitter, or cover it with decoupage. Step 8: Turn the rainstick upside down and let your filler (pebbles, beans, etc.) flow through the stick. You can also twist the rainstick or shake it. Different movements will make different sounds. Great Resource for Arts and Crafts for Kids! See my other crafty articles!
