Have you always wanted to run, but sometimes it is hard enough to go for a brisk walk? I can help you... I have done it myself! As always, check with your doctor before you begin a new workout routine.

First, find a friend/neighbor who has the same goals as you do. If you can find someone to walk with, great! If you can not walk together, its OK...as long as you both agree to get out and walk, you can call one another and encourage each other to press on!

Get out and walk. I would go for a walk outside, at a comfortable pace. I started with 1 mile and graduated to 4 as the months went on.

As my health began to progress, I began to do walking workouts inside the house as well as walking outside. Leslie Sansone has a series called, "walk away the pounds", this is what I used. They are wonderful! You can purchase a 1 mile DVD up to a 4 mile DVD and she has many different routines to choose from!

After I mastered all of the walking DVD's and was walking at a brisk pace outside, I decided to graduate to Leslie's "walk and jog" DVD. It was tough at first, but after the first 3 times, it got easier. Most of the DVD is walking, but there are 4, 2 minute jogging increments mixed in.

After I was comfortable with the "walk and jog", DVD, while walking with my neighbor, I tried to slowly jog 1 mile as she walked briskly! That was the beginning of my new found love...running!

After comfortable with jogging 1 mile, I decided to purchase a tread mill. I bought one used and started jogging on it. Each day, I would increase the speed until I began to run!

I was so excited to be running! I then, started to run outside for 1 mile. Then, 2 and so on.

I ran my first 5K race in April of last year (2008). (scene pictures above) I went slowly, but finished!
