Events in recent years, such as the war in Iraq, the legalization of gay marriage and the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, have all contributed to making politics a hot-button topic. Whether you're a Conservative in Canada or a Republican in the United States, chances are you'll be asked to defend your position at one point or another in a political debate. Since I am a Biology major, I have to defend my views on creation against evolution almost on a weekly basis.  I have became really good a debate, both formal and informal.  I apply these same skills to politics as well.

Step 1: Stay respectful of a Liberal's political views. Before you enter into any kind of discussion, debate or argument with a Liberal over politics, remember to respect their opinions first, even if you don't agree with them. Politics are a personal and passionate issue for many people, and political persecution is no more acceptable than racism, sexism or elitism.

Step 2: Be ready to face the negative stereotypes associated with Conservatism. Intolerance, lack of compassion for individual rights and blind allegiance to traditional institutions are just some of the many negative associations people have with Conservatism. If any of these traits factor into your politics, be prepared to defend them. However, if they don't factor in, still be prepared to deal with them.

Step 3: Point out the negative affects of an increasingly liberal society on western culture thus far. The sexual revolution and an increased divorce rate have all played a part in increasing the number of children raised below the poverty line in low-income families, which has then been attributed to an increased crime rate, drug abuse and other social concerns

Step 4: Take a stance on the progressive effects of Liberalism in society. Whether you agree with them or not, you will likely be presented with policies that have advanced rights for the individual, such as gay marriage and abortion. Know in advance, what your position is on these issues and be prepared to defend them in an argument or debate.

Remember that these are only as good as your knowledge in the field applied.  If you are a Republican because your father was and that’s all, you will be torn to pieces. Do your studies and you will be victorious.
