Making sidewalk chalk is a fun craft that you can do with your kids. The kids have fun making the sidewalk chalk and using the sidewalk chalk and you get to save money by helping them make their own sidewalk chalk! Things You'll Need: Step 1: Buy some Plaster of Paris and some powdered tempera paint. Both these items may be available at your local Wal-Mart. If not available there, try a Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or any craft store. You can also try Home Depot or Lowe's. Step 2: Look around for molds. You can use empty toilet paper rolls or you can also use larger size candy molds for fancy chalk. Another good mold is a small paper cup. One you start making your own sidewalk chalk you will be looking at everything in the house to see if it can be a mold. Step 3: Mix 1 cup of Plaster of Paris with 3/4 cup of water and mix well. Then add a bit of any color powdered tempera paint. Start by adding just a spoonful and mix. Then keep adding the paint until you get the color you want. Step 4: Once you have mixed your ingredients you can put the mix in your mold. If you are using toilet paper rolls just pack the mixture in the roll. If you are using other types of mold just firmly press the mixture into the molds. Step 5: Set the molds aside and let them dry completely. This may take a day or two depending on the humidity. If the molds are small they may be dry in as little as a few hours. When they look and feel dry take the chalk out of the molds and let them sit to dry for another 24 hours. Then they are ready to use. Step 6: Try making sidewalk in different shapes. You can make star shaped chalk or heart shaped chalk. There are many molds available at craft stores. There is no rule as to how you shape your sidewalk chalk. And be sure you make a set of colorful sidewalk chalk to give as a gift! See my other helpful articles!
