Item 1. Garden Tiller/ Cultivator A garden tiller is a necessity. It can work up hard ground in a hurry and save a lot of backbreaking work by an individual. There are two types of gasoline tillers. There is a mini and a heavy. New tillers begin at about $100 and go up from there. You can find used ones at a cheaper cost. A tiller can cut the earth to the required depth needed for planting. It also can quickly get rid of unwanted vegetation like weeds. Item 2. Fencing Fencing is essential for protecting your garden from furry critters like rabbits, squirrels, gophers and ground hogs. It will also help to keep out farm animals and domestic pets. Animals can do a lot of damage to a backyard garden, in a short order. Once a solid fence is up, it can be used for years to come. A good fence can solve a lot of problems for the gardener. Item 3. Rain water Barrel In many parts of the country, water is a commodity that can't be wasted. Rain water is free. It is untreated with chemicals. It can easily be set up, with down spouts from your roof. Place a faucet at the bottom of the barrel and run a garden hose to your garden and you have the moisture that your plants need to grow and mature. A rain barrel also shows the importance of water conservation. Item 4. Books When it comes to successful gardening, you can't beat knowledge. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or experienced backyard gardener, there is always something new to learn and try. You can read books, during the off growing season, and then apply your new knowledge in the spring. Knowledge of when to plant, how deep, and when are vital to a garden's success. These are four very important items, that a successful backyard gardener needs to consider.
