Often in a relationship, a topic will come up that you and your spouse do not see eye to eye on. Maybe a situation happened with your child or your spouse relayed an event that happened at work and you feel the need to state your point of view. How do you disagree with your spouse without it leading to an ugly argument?

Respect.

One of the most important things to have in a relationship is respect. You can disagree with someone but respect that you will see things differently on occasion.

Honesty.

Sometimes you need to be able to be honest with your spouse especially if you feel the way that they handled something was very wrong and could lead to making a situation worse. Being able to give your opinion is part of having an honest relationship.

Honey not vinegar.

Remember the old saying "you can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar"? Remember this while you agree to disagree. You can disagree in a polite way without name-calling or yelling. A disagreement can be a discussion of opinions.

Control your emotions.

Even if your spouse decides to take your criticism personally and react inappropriately, you can take the high road and not react overly emotionally. This will help to keep your disagreement from turning into an ugly argument. Arguing does not seem to solve anything. Walk away instead of engaging in a verbal war.

Maturity.

Always do your best to remind yourself that you are in a mature relationship. Avoid regressing to child-like behavior. Becoming defensive because your spouse does not see things your way implies that you are self-absorbed and righteous. Your spouse may actually help you to better yourself by taking a look at your reactions to disagreeing.

Above all remember that everyone is unique and sometimes our opinions are as well.
