You just found out that you are pregnant and you are concerned about how much weight you might gain. Guidelines seem to change every few years for what is recommended but generally you and your doctor can determine what weight gain is right for you. How do you maintain your weight while you "grow" a healthy baby? Here are some tips.

- Do not diet! Pregnancy is not the time to diet unless your doctor recommends a special diet for you. It also isn't the time to eat whatever you want. Pregnancy is not a license to see how many Big Macs you can handle.

- You are eating for two but that does not mean double your portions. Eating for two means you need to think about what kind of foods you are eating. Cut out the junk food and excessive caffeine. Some people cut caffeine out of their diets but this can cause headaches for women who are used to having it. Cut back with the idea of gradually reducing your caffeine intake. Watch out for artificial sweeteners also which are not really healthy.

- Make sure to get calcium. If you cannot have dairy products, there are other foods that contain calcium. If you are lactose-intolerant there are products that are lactose-free that are very good.

- Eating more natural foods can help you to maintain a comfortable weight gain. Eat slowly to avoid heartburn which can happen as your pregnancy advances. Eating smaller portions and having healthy snacks will help to not only keep your weight gain where it should be but will help you to avoid pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness, heartburn and hemorrhoids due to constipation.

- As long as your doctor approves, keep active with a fitness program. It is good for you, the baby and will help your delivery be smoother.

- Balance your life to include a healthy diet, exercise and a good attitude and you will have a happier pregnancy without worrying about excessive weight gain.
