play clay recipe

This is a craft recipe that will teach you how to make easy play clay. Play clay has a grainy texture and is excellent for flattening with a rolling pin and cutting into shapes.  When the clay is dry you can paint it with poster paint or enamel paint. You can use the shapes you make for necklaces, pins, ornaments, mobiles, decorations, etc. Remember to make a hole in the clay shape while it is wet if you plan on passing a cord through it to hang. Have fun with your play clay!

Step 1:  Gather the following ingredients to make your easy play clay: 1/2 cup of salt, 1/2 cup of hot water, 1/4 cup cold water, 1/2 cup cornstarch.

Step 2:  Mix the salt and hot water in a small pot and heat just to the boiling point.

Step 3:  Stir the cold water into the the cornstarch in a small bowl and mix well.

Step 4:  Add the cornstarch mixture to the boiling salted water and stir vigorously so you do not get any lumps.

Step 5:  Cook over low heat , stirring constantly, until the mixture is stiff like pie dough.

Step 6:  Remove the play clay from the heat and put it on a breadboard to cool.

Step 7:  Knead the cooled play clay until it is smooth and pliable.

Step 8:  Roll out your play clay and cut out your figures. You can also build figures or cover a can or jar with the play clay.

Step 9:  Let the play clay decorations you made dry for 1 to 2 days. To speed up the drying time, you can bake on a cookie sheet at 200 degrees for 1 hour.

Step 10:  Paint your dry play clay jewelry, ornaments or other decorative crafts you made!

Step 11:  Store any unused play clay by wrapping it in plastic wrap and keeping it in a covered container. It will keep a long time without refrigeration.
