How to Frost a Smooth Cake With No Crumbs

frost a cake

Don't you just hate it when you frost a cake and suddenly pieces of the cake come up and soon you have a bunch of crumbs mixed in the frosting! There is a way to end the crumby cake! Follow these steps to frost a cake so smooth and crumb free that people will think you used fondant!

Step 1:  PUT ON YOUR CRUMB COAT -- A crumb coat is the first coat of frosting that you put on your cake. It's okay to get crumbs mixed in the frosting on this coat so if you are cutting your cake into shapes you do not have to worry about the crumbs.  Just frost the entire cake with a thin layer of frosting... crumbs and all!

Step 2:  FREEZE YOUR CAKE -- After you apply the crumb coat you need to freeze your cake. You do not have to cover it. Simply put it in the freezer for a couple hours or over night.

Step 3:  ADD THE FINAL LAYER OF FROSTING -- Take the frozen cake out of the freezer and frost it while it is frozen. You do not have to use the same color frosting as the crumb coat. When the entire cake is frosted dip a long knife in hot water and spread the knife over the top of the cake (and the sides too if you want). It will make the cake smooth as silk! Then finish off by decorating any way you want!
