boat injuriesInfo:

When on a boat anyone can get hurt. Most times people go on a boat to have fun and enjoy nice weather. This time when they are “taking a break” they also forget the common since things they do on a daily basis to stay safe.

To prevent boat injuries it is up to everyone on the boat to think responsibly at all times. To prevent boat injuries it is up to the captain to set the rules and make sure they are followed by everyone on the boat. And most importantly to prevent boat injuries you should be aware of what is going on around you at all times, even outside of the boat. Below is a list of things you can do to be a responsible boater and prevent boat injuries.

Step 1:

If you are the skipper make sure you tell everyone on the boat what you expect them in a way of safety. If you don’t set the rules you are basically telling everyone there are no rules!

Step 2:

To avoid people falling you should always press on the throttle gently. Sudden changes in speed will cause the boat and everyone on it to jerk around and if someone is standing without holding on this could cause them to fall.

Step 3:

You should never go faster than you can handle. If the conditions are rough and the boat is getting tossed around on the water it’s a better idea to slow down a little. Many boats capsize because the water was just a little choppy and the boat was going way to fast for the conditions.

Step 4:

Know the rules of the water. Make sure you pass other boats on the correct side and allow enough space so that you are not going to accidentally hit another boat. Remember a good gust of wind and your boat will move in that direction.

Step 5:

Evenly distribute the items you intend to carry on the boat. If you have several coolers its better to stow them in the middle of the boat or one at each end instead of both at one end which will make it harder on your boats motor.

Step 6:

You should always make sure you have the proper safety equipment onboard before you leave shore. If you don’t have what you need you should not tempt it. Also make sure the items are stored properly so there is not a lot of unneeded clutter on the boat.

Step 7:

When riding in a boat make sure you are always aware of your balance. You should always be ready to steady yourself if needed.

Step 8:

When using stairs make sure you use them properly, facing toward the ladder so you don’t slip and fall with a missed step.

Step 9:

When the water is rough SIT DOWN. Its better to be sitting in a chair in the boat then standing or laying on open areas that offer no protection if there was a problem.
