Some airline tickets can be very expensive, but luckily there are ways to save money on these.

Step 1

Standby.

Going standby is a great way to save money on plane tickets. You can get a plane ticket for a fraction of it's original price this way. The only downside to this is that there is no guarantees. You might only have to wait standby for one flight or many. So if there is somewhere that you need to get to in a rush, standby may not be the best option. But if your time and dates are flexible, it can be a great way to save money.

Step 2

Purchasing tickets in advanced.

If you do not plan on getting an airline ticket through standby then it is important to buy one in advanced. Waiting til the last minute to purchase a plane ticket can be extremely expensive. Buying a plane ticket last minute could make a normally inexpensive ticket cost 4 or 5 times the usual cost. So to avoid paying large amounts of money on airfare. Make sure that you have planned out when you are wanting a flight, especially if your dates are not flexible.

Step 3

Becoming a frequent flyer.

Most airline companies, such as southwest and continental airlines, offer some type of reward program. This is a great idea if you travel a lot. By using your frequent flyer miles you can receive discounted tickets, or if you have enough, get a free flight. While it can take some time to accumulate frequent flyer miles, they can be used almost anytime. So after 6 or 7 paid flights, reward yourself by taking a flight for free.
