Here are a few steps you can take to find out the right memory for your computer using Crucial Scanner Tool. 1. Go to www.crucial.com. 2. Click on "SCAN MY COMPUTER".
3. Click "DOWNLOAD THE SCANNER". The scanner tool will be downloaded and will prompt you for installation. If your browser does not allow pop-up, you need to give permission to proceed with the installation process.
4. After the installation, it will automatically scan your hardware and give you all the information you need to be able to purchase memory for your computer upgrade. It will also provide recommended memory type that is compatible to your system if it is available.
The maximum memory capacity is the maximum that you can install and the maximum that can be handled by your processor. The current installed memory is what you have right now and it shown on the left hand portion of the result. The total memory slots is very important when buying the memory cards. For example, if you only have 2 slots you cannot buy four 512MB to maximize your 2GB capacity. You may want to get another 1GB to pair with the existing 1GB to make it 2GB. Or you can remove the existing 1GB and just buy a 2GB memory card. It is also important to consider the speed of the existing memory card if you still want to use it. When you have two memory card installed with different speeds, the system will default to the slower memory card.
