If you want to connect your computer to the internet through your iphone you need to know how to use iphone tethering. When you are using the internet connection from one device to connect another to the internet this is referred to as tethering. This can be done with the Iphone 3G and newer phones. What you are really doing is turning your iphone into a modem that connects your other electronic device to the internet. This is a great way to be connected to the internet remotely with a lap top or for those times you would like to be able to see the web pages on a bigger screen. Not to mention the ease of typing on a regular computer compared to a cell phone! Below are the steps to set up and use iphone tethering.

Step: 1

To set up the tethering connection on your Iphone:

a. Locate and access your setting application on your iphone.
b. Select the network option within the settings screen
c. This should pull up a page of network connections; here you should see the option for internet tethering. Slide the bar to on to activate the tethering service within your iphone, (to turn this off simply slide the bar to the off position).

Step:2

Connect your Iphone to the computer: You can use either a USB to Dock connector or Blue tooth to connect your iphone to your computer.

a. USB option: You can connect your iphone to your computer using a data cable. For the iphone it should be a dock connection on one end (to go into your Iphone) and a USB connection on the other (to go into the computer). Within your computers network service settings you will need to choose Iphone. On PC systems you will use the network control panel to select and set up the iphone connection.

b. Blue tooth option: You can connect your computer to your iphone “modem” through Blue tooth by turning your Blue tooth on your iphone. You will need to open your settings application, click on general, and then select Blue tooth. From here you will need to turn on the Blue tooth feature. Next you should turn on the Blue tooth for your computer and pair and connect the two devices together.

Step:3

To verify you have successfully connected through iphone tethering you can look on your iphone screen, you should see a blue band across the top of the iphone screen. This will stay on the screen the full time you use iphone tethering.

Some cell phone companies charge extra for tethering make sure you check before you connect!

To check your data usage press on your settings icon. From here click general then usage.

Iphone tethering will stay connected the full time you are connected through a USB to Dock connection, even if you are not using the internet.

Tethering is only available through the cellular data network not through a Wi-Fi connection to the internet.

When using iphone tethering over a 3G cellular connection you will still be able to make and receive phone calls.
