How to Show Your Child Fire Safety

Fire safety is a subject that is usually not discussed enough in the home between children and their parents. I know from experience that some preschool age children are afraid of firefighters when we put on all our gear for show and tell at the fire station. This is one of the major reasons parents should make sure they visit their local fire station and let their child see a firefighter dressed out in full turn out gear with the air pack and air mask on. All this gear can be a scary sight to your little one.

Step 1-One of the first things every parent needs to teach their child is that firefighters are their friends. The best way to do this is to take your child to the closest fire station in your home town and ask the captain in charge if he or she could have a show and tell for you and your child.

Step 2-In your home you can teach your child some basic things like showing them the stove or oven, hot water heater, space heater, matches, lighters, or anything else in your home that may get hot and may burn your child.

Step 3-Show your child the smoke detector in the home and explain what it does and what it is for and what it sounds like when there is smoke in the house, Show them what they should do if they hear the smoke alarm go off during anytime of the night or day. Show them how to crawl low while yelling for help and you and your child crawl out of the house to a safe place. Remember to stay out if there is real smoke and fire. Practice this fire drill monthly it can be fun and a learning experience all in one.
