From time to time, a home owner may need to use a jackhammer. You might have an old sidewalk, patio, or driveway to remove. This article will explain how to effectively use a jackhammer. You can rent a jackhammer by the day or by the hour from a tool rental or hardware store. They can be rather expensive. Sometimes you can find another individual that needs to do a job and you can share the cost of rental. They are usually mounted on a two wheel cart. his makes them easy to move around. Most jackhammers are powered by electricity, but I have seen them with gasoline engines. If you use an electric jackhammer, be sure to use a heavy duty extension cord. Smaller ones will get too hot. There are five bits that go with a jackhammer. The spade is used for a flat finish on concrete. The Flat tip allows for finger edge trim. The point is for breaking of a solid surface. The stake driver drives concrete away from stakes. The scrabbler is used to allow a smooth surface finish. You will need boots, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. It is also a good idea to wear heavy pants. The jackhammer can get very warm on your legs. When you use a jackhammer, you are going to let it rest on one of your thighs as it works for you. Always let the machine work or you. Don't force it around with your lifting. Simply place it where you want it and then let the machine do the work. You will let it lean at a slight angle. The trigger is usually located on the right handle. Always start from the outside and work inward. Break off small pieces at a time. Check for construction rods in the concrete. If you come across any, it will have to be cut out with a torch or grinder. Use a steel pry bar to help loosen the concrete from time to time. Do not try to do a big section at a time. Go about 6 to 8 inches apart from each one. Every time to break away a section, turn of the power and lift or drag the hammer back from the spot. Anybody can operate a jackhammer. They just have to be patient and try not to do too much.
