Step 1

First, pick out your fabric. Heavier fabrics work best, and make sure the fabric is nice and soft. Fleece works well, and is great to help keep you warm.

Step 2

Decide how large you want the warmer to be. For hand warmers go smaller, for example 2 by 4 inches or 2 by 2 inches, depending on how large you want them to be. For a larger heating pad try a bigger size like 8 by 8 inches.

Step 3

When you cut the fabric, cut it into one piece so it can fold in the middle. For example, if you wanted to make the hand warmer 2 by 4 inches, cut the fabric 2 by 8 inches and then fold it in half.

Step 4

Pin the edges of the fabric together with the wrong side of the fabric on the outside. Sew the edges together, leaving an opening to put the rice into. Using the opening in the fabric, turn the piece of fabric so the right side is on the outside.

Step 5

Fill the warmer with rice. White rice is perfect to use. Do not fill completely full. Leave a little space so the rice can move around.

Step 6

Fold the edges of the opening in so the edge looks the same as the rest of the edges. Using the needle and thread, hand sew the opening closed by weaving in and out of the inner flap.

Step 7

To heat the warmer, place in the microwave for 1 to 4 minutes depending on the size. Enjoy your hand warmers and use when you are feeling chilly.
