How to Hook up a Laptop to an External Monitor

Intro: If you want to connect an external monitor to your laptop, you need to activate the second monitor from the display settings. Follow these steps to hook up a laptop to an external monitor.

Step 1: Connect the external monitor to your laptop. The external monitor will most likely connect to the VGA connector on the back of the laptop. Once you get the monitor wire connected to your laptop and plugged in, move on to the next step.

Step 2: To hook up a laptop to an external monitor, click “Start” at the bottom left hand side of your computer.

Step 2: After you click “Start,” select Control Panel.

Step 3: To hook up a laptop to an external monitor, you will need to select Appearance and Themes.

Step 4: Click Display and then click the Settings tab.

Step 5: Under the settings tab, you will see two square monitor icons. One icon has a number 1 in the middle of it and the second icon has a number 2 inside of it. The number 2 icon is the newly attached monitor. Click on that icon and then check the box that says “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.” You can click and drag the second monitor icon to either the left or right side of your laptop monitor icon, depending on which side you are putting the physical external monitor on.

Step 6: After you connect a laptop to an external monitor, you should click “Apply” and then “OK.”

Tips: To hook up a laptop to an external monitor, follow the above steps and don’t forget to save it by click “Apply.”

Warnings: Your laptop becomes a more stationary computer once you attach the second monitor.

To unhook to external monitor, just unplug it from the laptop.
