Next, on the start up menu, select safe mode.  Step 2: If you have Windows 2000, you should shut down windows and turn off the computer. After 30 seconds of being off, turn on your computer, and start tapping the F8 key when you see the black and white starting windows bar at the bottom of the screen. Once the advanced options menu appears, select safe mode (if not already selected), and then press enter. Windows will now start in safe mode.  Step 3: If you have Windows XP, you should click Start and then Run, while the computer is on and all other programs are closed. In the run box, type “MSCONFIG,” then click OK. Once the System Configuration Utility appears, click on the “BOOT.INI” tab, check “/SAFEBOOT,” and click ok. You will be prompted to restart your computer and you should do so. Now your windows will start in safe mode. To get back to normal mode, follow the above steps to uncheck “/SAFEBOOT.”  Step 4: If you have Windows Vista, restart your computer and tap the F8 key repeatedily. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu should appear and you should select the safe mode selection (if not already selected). Click enter and then the computer will start in safe mode. Restart your computer to get out of safe mode.  Tips: If you have a virus, try to Google the name of the virus to find out how others were able to remove it in safe mode.  Warnings: If you start tapping the F8 key too soon, you may get an error message. If you do, just restart your computer and try again.
