How to Cool an Overheated Engine

Intro: An overheated engine can damage your automobile if not handled properly. Follow these steps to learn how to cool an overheated engine.

Step 1: If your engine starts to overheat when driving down the road, you may notice some smoke coming from under your hood or one of the gauges on your dashboard will show your engine overheating. You should pull over immediately.

Step 2: As soon as you are pulled over, turn off the engine and open the hood.

Step 3: First, check the coolant level. There should be a plastic tank, called the coolant reservoir. You should not open the cap on the radiator until the engine cools down. You can seriously burn yourself if you try to remove the cap.

Step 4: Once the engine cools down, you should use a funnel to add coolant to the reservoir if it is below the line.

Step 5: If the coolant level is fine, then you should call a tow truck and take the overheated automobile to a professional mechanic. If you don’t have a cell phone to call for a tow truck, you can drive the car after it has cooled down. Drive slowly and pull over again as soon as you see the gauge go back into the hot area.

Tips: As soon as you notice the automobile overheating, you should turn the heat on high inside the car to help divert heat away from the engine.

Warnings: The hood may be hot when trying to open it; be careful.
