How to Choose a Major in College

Intro: Choosing a major in college can be a tough decision which will probably affect a big portion of your life. I didn’t even choose a major until a week before my first college class. Many students don’t choose majors until 1 to 2 years of college have gone by. Follow these steps to help you choose a major in college.

Step 1: Think about what you enjoy doing. Do a Google search to find out all the different careers you could choose from. Once you see a career you think you will like, do more research and find out what major would be best to get a job in that field.

Step 2: If you have a few ideas for a major, take a class on each one of those subjects in your first semester to see which one you like best. If you can’t decide between two majors then think about getting a double major.

Step 3: Get a list of classes that you will have to take to graduate with a particular major. For example, I thought about becoming a mechanical engineer major but after seeing how much math and physics classes I would have to take, I immediately changed my mind.

Step 4: To choose a major in college, do a search for the most in demand jobs. Many people can forecast what jobs will be needed in the years to come. If you get a major aligned with one of the in demand jobs, then you will almost be guaranteed a job upon graduation.

Step 5: Understand that it may take 5 years to graduate instead of 4, if you switch your major after a year or two in college. I know people who switched their major 3 times before realizing what they really wanted to do. Don’t worry about adding an extra year onto college. You will have to make sacrifices to get the career you’ve always dreamed of.

Step 6: Don’t let money, friends, or family influence you to go into a career which you do not like. Go down a career path which you will have fun doing. You should have the goal of going to a job thinking “I can’t believe they pay me to do this.”

Step 7: To choose a major, take a variety of classes throughout your college years. You may stumble upon a class, which you have never had before, that you just love. Doing this may help you decide what minor you want.

Tips: Find an online community which is dedicated to the field you want to go into. Join and start participating in this forum to get a better idea of if you want to stick with your major or not.

Don’t be afraid to switch majors. You will not be happy if you stick with a major you really don’t love.

Perform a ton of research about which college offers the best solution for the major you want to go into.

Choose a major in college based on what you enjoy in life. Don’t let anyone influence you to get a different major because it may pay better down the road.
