How to Avoid Car Accidents with Deer

Intro: Many areas of the United States are populated with dear. Whether you are near home or on vacation you should follow these steps to avoid car accidents with deer and dramatically reduce your odds of hitting one.

Step 1: Pay attention at night. Deer are most active at night. Seeing a deer at night is very difficult and makes hitting them almost unavoidable. To protect yourself you should use your bright lights when driving. An obvious suggestion is to drive slower at night. Hitting a deer at 60 mph is going to do a lot more damage than hitting it at 40 mph. If you happen to see a deer, you should slow way down because there are most likely more deer nearby.

Step 2: Don’t assume they aren’t out there. If you driving in an area well known for deer than they definitely are out there. Always pay close attention around fields, wooded areas, streams, and etc. These are areas where deer live. Even if you see signs of habitat which deer could be living in, you should slow down.

Step 3: If you get in a situation where hitting the deer is unavoidable then you should not swerve. You should hit your brakes and brace yourself. Swerving out of the way when you know its unavoidable will just put you and your passengers in a great risk of being hurt. Automobiles are designed to take head on collision efficiently and effectively while protecting the passengers. Swerving out of the way could cause a much worse accident.

After hitting a deer, you need to make sure your passengers are ok and see if you need to tow your car or if it is drivable. Don’t approach the deer because it may attack you out of fear. Drive 100 feet, if possible, away from the deer before inspecting your automobile. You should call and alert the appropriate authorities.

Tips: Don’t approach the deer to see if it’s ok.

To avoid car accidents with deer, you should drive slow and pay attention when in a deer area or if having seen a deer.

Warnings: Always wear your seat belts. A seat belt could mean life or death when getting in a car accident with deer.
