How to Breathe Properly During a Work Out

Intro: Holding your breath or breathing out of rhythm when working out can have negative effects on you and your work out. Follow these steps to learn how to breathe properly during a work out.

Step 1: During your workout you will have two separate moments; one when you use force and one when you relax. For example, when doing a pushup you will exert force on the push up and relax on the way down.

Step 2: The proper way to breathe when exerting force (on the way up from a push up) is to exhale. For example, on a bench press you would exhale when pushing the weight from your chest up into the air.

Step 3: The proper way to breathe when relaxing (on the way down from a push up) is the inhale. For example, on a bench press you would inhale when lowering the bar from the air down to your chest. On a bicep curl, you would inhale when lowering the weight down. You would exhale when curling up the weight.

Tips: Pretty simple stuff. With a little practice, you will start naturally breathing correctly.

You exhale when you exert force. This is why you hear major weight lifters grunt when they are lifting heavy weights.

Warnings: Don’t hyperventilate when doing super fast push ups or work outs.

It's important to be conscious of your breathing and learn not to hold your breath when exercising - good advice!
